Spotlight: Web3 Gaming
Since our first publication back in October, we’ve highlighted a number of unique use cases for blockchain technology including Real Estate Tokenization, Decentralized Infrastructure, and the Fusion with AI.
Today we’re covering one of the hottest digital asset trends of 2023 - Web3 Gaming.
Earlier this month, CoinDesk published an article predicting the market size for blockchain-based gaming is expected to reach $66 billion in revenue by 2027. That’s up from just $4.6 billion in 2022.
So what is Web3 Gaming and what are the benefits?
Simply put, Web3 games use blockchain technology to enhance or rearchitect the experience of traditional video games. This can be done by integrating crypto wallets, smart contracts, or in-game tokens.
This unlocks new experiences for gamers like being able to earn real money just from playing your favorite games, being able to trade in-game assets securely and transparently with other players around the world, and having a vote in the future development of certain games.
Below is a breakdown of how a Web3 game could be structured vs. a traditional video game.
Now let’s look at 2 innovative projects leading the way in Web3 Gaming:
1. SHRAPNEL
SHRAPNEL is a first-person extraction shooter where you'll fight as a MEF (Mercenary Extraction Force) Operator. The gameplay is competitive and intense. In 2038 an asteroid collided with the moon, and years later meteorites rain down on earth repeatedly: dangerous yet valuable. Your mission is to collect this mysterious meteorite substance, survive in military combat, and get out alive.
The SHRAPNEL team is comprised of industry experts from notable franchises like HALO, Call of Duty, Madden NFL, Bioshock, Destiny, Star Wars, Hawken, Skylanders, Westworld, and over 30 more titles. Members of this team directly contributed to winning more than 40 entertainment awards.
The $SHRAP in-game token is based on the Avalanche blockchain and enables a rich set of player-creation tools, combining creation, curation, and connection into a game where players own the platform.
2. Photo Finish™ LIVE 🌹 🐎 Virtual Horse Racing
Photo Finish is an absolutely stunning virtual horse racing game built by Third Time Entertainment. Players are able to buy, sell, trade, and breed their own virtual horses, and then race against other players for real money!
Oh and did we mention Photo Finish just became official game partners with the Kentucky Derby!
Photo Finish runs entirely on the Solana blockchain, where race-entry fees and payouts are enabled by the game’s tokens $CROWN and $DERBY.
